Stormy Start to the Holiday Weekend!

You might say the holiday weekend started "with a bang." Strong storms were ignited by Friday night sending many folks indoors (along with their fireworks). There will be periods of drier weather over the next day or two... but you might have to plan your outdoor activities in between rounds of rain. More storms could form, as we're still tapping into tropical type moisture coming in from the Atlantic Ocean and up from the Caribbean Sea.

Here's the pattern: More thunderstorms will develop along active sea breezes during the course of the day. So, mainly afternoon and evening storms are expected. By Sunday and Monday, a weak tropical wave will scoot by... to our south then west. Right now the wave looks very unhealthy (so it may not amount to much). Having said that, there is ample moisture that's still available for rain. Any shower that pops up could be heavy at times, too. Daytime temperatures will continue to heat up to around 90 degrees, along with high levels of humidity.

Through Tuesday, we'll rain chances running slightly higher than normal (between 40 and 60% daily). Then, some minor drying should arrive during the middle of the week.

As for the tropics, we're keeping our eyes on a couple waves in the Caribbean. Upper level winds do not favor any kind of development... since they're too harsh.

Tropical Storm Bertha is a long, long way away. It's located in the eastern Atlantic and it's more than 3,000 miles from Florida. Over the next several days, Bertha will move toward the west... and may pick up some speed (although probably not much additional strength). The main question will remain unanswered for a couple more days: will it re-curve around the western periphery of high pressure? If so, that's good news because it would get deflected from the United States (and probably wouldn't even impact any land areas). It is also still too early to make the call on whether Bertha will pass north of the islands (remaining in the Atlantic Ocean). Most computer models suggest a turn early next week, and they only forecast slight strengthening. If it misses the turn, however, a southerly track could make Bertha stronger (with less friction and interference). Needless to say, it is something we'll want to keep tabs on over the next several days.

Stay tuned to your storm station for the very latest tropical weather information, all season long.
